The poster was for a screening of Almost Famous, a super great, semi-autobiographical film directed by Cameron Crowe, about a young music fan trying to make it as a rock critic in the 1970s. It follows him as he tours with fictional up-and-coming rock band Still Waters, on whom he's been asked by Rolling Stone magazine to produce an article, and his developing friendship with free spirit & band aid Penny Lane. I had to illustrate the collective nouns for two animals – 'A Kindle of Hares' and 'A Shiver of Sharks'. These were then to be made into a repeat pattern by the team's designers. The new look has now officially been launched and the stationery, designed by Dion Star, looks super! He has previously published two other zines; The Film One and The Music One, with such illustrious contributors as Marcus Oakley, Lizzie Stewart, Ben Javens & Jake Blanchard. So obviously I said hell yes! For my illustration, I chose the book The Fortress of Solitude, by Jonathan Lethem, one of my favourite books. Here's a paragraph about it that accompanied my squiggles... 'The Fortress of Solitude is the story of an unlikely friendship, set against the backdrop of a changing Brooklyn neighbourhood in 70s/80s New York. It centres around Dylan Ebdus & Mingus Rude, two teenagers from differing backgrounds. Dylan is white & Mingus is black; one's parents are hippy artists & the other's is an ex-member of a 60s soul group turned drug addict. Together they navigate the choppy waters of racial tension, bullying, graffiti, music, comic books & self-discovery. The book fizzes with atmosphere and brings to life two characters whose fate you really care about.
